The Last Samurai

I watched this last night. And I missed the first part of it. But still.

As you all know, I generally show either vague disdain/complete uninterest in Tom Cruise films as I consider that I know too much about the actor to get stuck into his characters.

Well.

I BLOODY LOVED THIS!

I thought it would be entirely lame, and totally Hollywood (which, I suppose it still was...) and without real emotion and stuff!

But it wasn't.

I cried. Twice. Although, I have a thing about doing that recently at the drop of a hat. It only happens when I'm alone and it's like 1-2 AM like it was last night.

I didn't see the first part as I said, so I don't really get how he came to join the Samurai but from what I could make out he battled them, killed a lot of them and they took him prisoner to later be released.

I did find it a little odd that he ended up staying with the family of one of the men he had killed. But then I don't know the context. Anyway, he had a bit of somethin' somethin' going on with the man's wife. It was all subtext and vibes, you see.

Who knew a woman dressing a man in armor could be so compelling.

The battle scenes were amazing and the way the Samurai got shot and STILL kept fighting...ad-re-na-line!

The bit where the boy warrior was dying but he still ran up the bridge firing arrows at the enemy, THEN pulling out his sword and running towards them only to get riddle with bullets made me cry.

Stereotypical woman, I am.

Also, it starred Ken Watanabe and I recognised that name from reading he's going to be in a film with SMG.

Anyway, I liked this film a bit.

Its a complete smash youve got to see the start if you can, the bit where he's fighting against the Samuras is a sensation ! tHEN THE PARTS WITH HIM DOING THE WOODEN SWORD FIGHTS WITH THEM WHILE VAGUELY A PRISONER ARE GREAT TOO .

tHE PART WITH wATANABE'S DYING SON IS DEVESTATING ,AS IS ALOT OF IT , BUT ITS GREATLY UPLIFTING AT TIMES TOO

The emperor is remarkably uninspiring and lily livered

I want to see it again

haha the Emperor was a pansy. His voice made me laugh. Still, he came through at the end.
I thought the part at the end was just cheesy/inspiring enough to get away with it when they said -

Emperor: "Tell me how he died"
Tom Cruise: "I'll tell you how he lived"

Oooh Ahhh.

If I ever get the chance I will indeed try and see the beginning.

That Ken get's around, doesn't he? Blimey.

I watched a program about Hiroshima slightly after that, so Japan really got a battering last night from my perspective.

Then again I also watched The L Word for the first time all the way through, and after much uncomfortable squirming (say nothing!) I finally understood that lesbians are great! Well, I knew that already but...

Good old Ken The actor playing the Emporor would be crushed if he heard them say on the commentary " we cast him as he was the weediest most unimpressive man we could find! "

There hasnt been a great Hiroshima film , there needs to be one

That evil show should be banned !! Mia Kirshner being all confused is only going to corrupt other borderliners!

This was more a factual Hiroshima program. Interesting stuff. *whips Americans*

Mia Kirshner is boderline? *investigates*. I think I like that show now. At first I was all "Oh, it's a gimmick, just an excuse for lot's of gay loving." which, you know, it okay but I like a bit of substance to most things. I still couldn't watch it with my mum though, oh my goodness awkward!

I liked that The Last Samurai had a couple of UKers in it, even if I did miss Billy Connolly entirely.

Empire of the Sun has a good bit about Hiroshima , its only a small moment in the film but a good one .

In the pilot she was 'in love' with a man but was staring longingly over the fence at the lesbian jollity taking place .

Timothy Spall was funny , Cruise must like him as he's in Vanilla Sky too, Connolly was playing an irish character with a remarkable accent

I read an interview with Mr. Spall where he was saying that he and Tom are great friends.

Well, who doesn't look over at the raging homosexuals and just think "God, hetero is so retro"

Im sure the L word's audience reflects that opinion

I don't think The L Word's audience reflects any sort of opinion except for "Guuhhh...". At least, during the show.

I think people dont tune in for any sordid reasons

Im already one , they show you how to induct yourself during the first 5 minutes of the film Mia Kirshner went through a similar initiation in the L word pilot

I was going to purchase "Monster" today, but opted for a book instead.

I know, that's why I want to see it. Tis a very compelling story. Also ugly Charlize Theron is never a bad thing in my book. Svelte cow.

"The Good, The Bad, and The Undead" hehe. It's right up my alley. I'm still waiting for "A Catcher in the Rye" to be reduced to 50p. Currently, it's 7.99.

I still couldn't help thinking in The Last Samurai that Katie Holmes was marrying THAT. I actually referred to him, in my head, as 'that'.
