Nov. 22 – You'll have to forgive David Boreanaz if, after playing a vampire for seven years on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Angel,' he's happy playing a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy in his new series, 'Bones.'
As FBI agent Seeley Booth, Boreanaz brings a humorous touch to a show about corpses. The chemistry between Boreanaz and his co-star, Emily Deschanel, who plays Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan, is reminiscent of a similar agent/scientist couple, Mulder and Scully from 'The X-Files.'
Boreanaz chatted with AOL Television editor Kelly Woo on his morning commute about his character's dark side, upcoming episodes and his secret to chemistry with co-stars.
On paper, 'Bones' sounds like a typical procedural, but then when you watch it, it's got all this witty banter. Do you enjoy playing the more comedic elements?
The witty banter is really the point because it is a very character-driven show. I've always liked shows that have really strong characters. Yes, I like playing the more comedic elements.
What do you like about your character?
He's pretty much a fighter for the common man, a blue collar simple guy. He's very into the whole kind of the give and take with Bones. He's a cheeseburger, cup of coffee, apple pie, diner kind of guy. He's really a throwback character, by that I mean Gary Cooper, a little Robert Mitchum, Steve McQueen. That to me is really, really cool. He's just a really cool character.
What is it like working with Emily? Everybody's talking about your chemistry together.
Emily is great. She's incredibly hard-working and we challenge each other. Much of our on-screen chemistry is a testament to the dialogue of the show. We also have a lot of fun together because she's so sweet to be around. We have become good friends.
You seem to generate chemistry with most of your leading ladies. What's your secret?
The secret to chemistry with leading ladies is respect, understanding and just always being a gentleman.
Booth seems to think about himself as the "normal" guy amongst the "squints." But do you think there's a darker side to him, perhaps originating from his time as an army sniper?
Yes, I think Booth does have a dark side and that is what drives him in some ways.
Are you excited that the show has done so well?
I'm extremely excited and grateful about the show's reception so far.
Can you tell us anything about what's coming up on 'Bones'?
In the show's Christmas episode, a lot of things will affect my relationship with Emily's character. Brennan will open up to Booth about her background -- the loss of her parents and her experiences in foster care. We are quarantined in the lab and everyone's dark secrets just come pouring out, and there's a new understanding of how and why these characters tick. In all its intensity, there's good humor too. It's definitely an episode worth checking out.
