Or there's "The Lovely Bones" - Alice Sebold, "The Loop" - Nicholas Evans...or the Phillip Pullman Dark Materials books.
"Lucas" - Kevin Brooks. We discussed the front cover of this book once.
And, since you can pick any book I'd do a Laurell. K. Hamilton one (before she got dirrty) or possibly Kim Harrison, or Kelley Armstrong. But they're not considered academic. For some reason.
Virginia Andrews is popular, too. I read the Orphans series.
Oh and "Once" by James Herbert is good, too.

Sherylon Kenyons Vampire novels are good. Just type in Dark Hunters into Google and you can see her sight, they are actually really good ^^

Inspiration has struck me.
The short story "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury is a good one to read, it's critically acclaimed and is even regularly referenced in Pop Culture. It's about time travel.

He's the same guy that wrote Fahrenheit 451! Woo! I may just have to try that one.
