Buffy stared into the mirror at the reflection she just kept thinking couldn’t be hers. This wasn’t possible. It was way too good to be true.
But it was real.
A tear fell from her eye and her sister came into the room. She looked at Buffy and just smiled. “Loving the dress on you. You look perfect.”
She looked to Dawn and nodded a little, smiling her head off as more tears fell. This was the happiest day of her life. “Thanks, Dawnie. You look great too.”
Dawn laughed and walked over to Buffy, wrapping her arms around her for a hug. She was careful though not to wrinkle either of their dresses. That wouldn’t look too good once they got out there in front of everyone.
“Why thank you? I do look good don’t I?” Dawn asked she pulled away from her sister and laughed. “I’m just glad you let me help pick out the dresses. Purple is so my color.” The dress was a silk halter top dress and was a very light purple color. Since she was the Maid of Honor she wore a small flower pinned to the top of the dress near the left strap. Her shoes were the same color as the dress and were about 2 inches high heel-wise. Her hair was curled and make up done and one side of her hair was tucked back where a flower, matching the one on her dress, was stuck there.
Buffy laughed and reached up to wipe a tear from her eye. “I’m probably smudging my makeup.” She stated but Dawn just shook her head.
“Nope. You look fine. It’s why we got all water proof stuff, remember?” She smiled then motioned for her sister to do a spin. Buffy abided.
The bottom of Buffy’s dress twirled with her beautifully. It was pure white, which she had hesitated about but everyone insisted upon it. When she mentioned getting an off-white dress they practically started an apocalypse. She finally gave in and got a white one. Which she was happy about because she had always dreamed of wearing a white dress on this day.
It was poofy, and she loved it. It had layers and layers on the bottom half of it, making it poof out and she felt like a princess. The sleeves of the dress went down to her elbows and the trim around them was made of a nice silver thread. It hung off over her shoulders, looking like it had been folded down a little bit, and went down to a faint point on her chest. But it wasn’t too low, she wanted to look nice, not like a slut. That thought always made her laugh.
Throughout the top of the dress you could barely see a few flower designs sewed in by the shiny silver thread, but you could only see it when a light hit it just right. Dawn had asked why they were even there if you couldn’t see them that well. Buffy had just smiled at her and told her that this dress was the one. Dawn had nodded and smiled as well, completely forgetting the flower thing.
Buffy’s hair was up in a bun and the veil hung from it perfectly. She had asked not to get one that covered her face. When she had tried one on like that it had annoyed the hell out of her.
Dawn gave a nod of approval as Buffy finished her spin for her and spoke. “Hot mamma in a wedding dress, watch out!”
Buffy shook her head and laughed again. God she was so happy. She had never expected this to happen in a millions years. She didn’t think she’d be that lucky.
But here she was, 26 years old, in Rome, a city she had grown to love over the years, and getting ready to marry the man of her dreams. She was the happiest woman on the face of the Earth.
There was a knock on the door and both girls looked over to see Willow peek her head into the room. She waved cheerfully and walked in, Faith following close behind. They were dressed just like Dawn, but without a flower pinned to their dresses. Everything else was the same though. Same hairstyle, makeup, and so on.
The sight of Faith in a bridesmaid’s dress shocked everyone, but she did look nice.
“You know, B. I’m so gonna have to get you back for this one. You owe me big time.” She tried to sound threatening, which was normally easy for her, but a smile curled on her lips.
“We get it Faith. You’re not so much for the girly stuff.” Willow replied then looked at Buffy. “You’re getting married!” And with a squeal she rushed over to her best friend and they hugged while gently jumping up and down.
Dawn and Faith crossed their arms at almost the exact same time and exchanged glances. Dawn, trying to be funny, nodded towards them. “Couple of real girly girls there, right, F?”
Faith shook her head and laughed at the girl and gave her a playful shove. “You’re nuts girl, you know that?”
“Yeah, I know.” She nodded, smiling happily as she did so.
Willow and Buffy finally finished the hugging and were both smiling broadly when another knock came at the door.
“It’s about time.” The voice belonged to Giles. He had stuck his head in the room just to let them know that. “You should all be getting ready. Music will start soon.” He pulled back out of the room and shut the door. Willow, Dawn, Faith, and especially Buffy all began to get a little nervous.
“Oh my God. This is really going to happen, isn’t it?” Buffy asked, starting to pace back and forth. “What if I can’t do it? What if I get out there and I can’t speak? What if this all goes wrong! What if some demon attacks!”
Dawn rushed over to her, placing her hands on her sister’s shoulders and stopped her. “Buffy, everything’s going to go fine. We promise. It’s going to be great. Now let’s get out there and show that future hubby of yours what you’re made of.”
She pulled Buffy into a hug then when she pulled back noticed Buffy had a tear running down her cheek again. “You know, that whole water proof makeup thing isn’t exactly perfect, you might wanna save the water works till later.”
The older Summers nodded and wiped the tear away, smiling.
“Let’s go!” Dawn grinned and linked her arm around Buffy’s. Faith and Willow led them out the door. She let go once they were out there and walked over to the entrance to the main part of the church, peeking her head around the corner to see where all the guests were sitting and everything.
Buffy walked over to Faith and smiled at her. “Dresses are nice on you, you should try it more often.”
“Don’t count on it.” The brunette shook her head, then paused. “Thanks for asking me to do this, B. It means a lot.”
Buffy smiled at her slayer counterpart. “You deserved it. Hey, we might not have gotten along for most of the time we knew each other, but since then you’ve changed. You’re a great slayer, person, friend...all rolled into one, Faith.”
Faith had softened a bit during that and almost had a tear in her eye. When she realized that she just laughed. “Great goin’. Trying to get me all worked up. Ain’t gonna happen. I don’t cry at weddings.” They grinned at each other a moment, sharing another laugh then shared a hug as well, before Buffy headed over to Giles.
“Hey.”
“Hello Buffy. You look beautiful.” He smiled sincerely at her. “I can’t tell you how much this means to me that you asked me to give you away....”
Buffy shrugged. “You’ve always been like a father to me, Giles. Who else would I have picked? My own dad hasn’t even called to say “Congrats.”
Giles gently nodded and they stood there for a moment before both of them turned and saw Angel and Xander walking out of the men’s dressing room.
“Wow, Buff. Someone went a little overboard in the beauty department. Don’t ya think? I may just have to marry you myself.” Xander grinned and walked over to Buffy, quickly wrapping his arms around her. They hadn’t really gotten to talk much recently. She’d seen him a few times while doing wedding planning and stuff, but that was about it.
“Typical Xander.” Buffy laughed and pulled back to look at him. “Sorry, Xand, but I’m taken. I’ll take a rain check on it though.”
“Fair enough.” He nodded and still grinned. “Better watch out for him though..” He pointed back to Angel who had stood in silence.
“Oh I will.” Buffy narrowed her eyes as she looked over at Angel, as if suspecting him of some great crime. She smiled at Xander once more before making her way over to him.
“Hi...” He was the first person to speak.
“Hi.” Buffy said right back. “You look nice. Angel in a tux, wowsa. Always did like that look on you.”
“And you look....”
“Beautiful? Gorgeous? Breathtaking? Okay...scratch that last one since you’re a vamp and all...” She laughed.
“How about all of the above? Would that work?” He smirked at her.
“Yeah, that’ll have to do.” She nodded. “Angel, I’m so glad you agreed to this. You of all people were definitely not someone I was picturing as being the Best Man.”
“It surprised the hell out of me too.” There was a slight laugh from the king of brooding and Buffy caught it.
“Ah, so there is a happy guy inside there somewhere. Just not too happy. Cause that’s bad.”
“You caught me. Happy.” He stopped speaking a moment, as if to catch his breath. “I am happy, for you. I’m glad you got this. A wedding. Love. It’s all I ever wanted for you. Happiness.”
Buffy felt a tear start to come to her eye again and then she just opened her arms. “Oh just come here. I’ve got hugs for everyone.”
Angel didn’t hesitate to step forwards, gently placing his arms around here. They just stood there like that for a moment. Only stopping once Giles said it was time. He kept one arm around her waist after they pulled back, and he walked her over to Giles.
“Think you can take her off my hands, Giles?” He asked. “I mean, once she gets a hold of you, she clings on for life.”
“Hey!” Buffy nudged Angel then laughed. “I resent that.”
“It’s only the truth. Had to find out sooner or later.” Angel was grinning about this time.
Buffy childishly stuck her tongue out at him and there was some laughing from his direction before she walked over to Giles and linked her arm through his.
Angel watched them a moment before walked over to Dawn, who had already gotten in her place, and linking arms with her. Xander stood with Willow and Faith stood alone since Giles would have been her escort down the hall, but he had been chosen to give Buffy away.
Buffy took a deep breath as she heard the music begin to play. At their cue, Dawn and Angel made their way from the hall they were in and down the aisle of the main part of the church. At the next cue, out stepped Xander and Willow, then last but not least, Faith followed down.
Buffy by now had been taking quite a few deep breaths. Giles looked over at her and gave her a reassuring smile as he asked “Are you ready, Buffy?”
Just that smile of his made her feel better and she nodded. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”
With that they began their journey to the end of the aisle. Buffy looked around at all of the people that had gathered there just for the purpose of her wedding. She’d never realized she knew this many people. They were all standing as she made her way down through there with Giles and she tried to smile at each an every one of them.
Riley was even there with Sam, and they’re three year-old daughter, Elizabeth. There were people from the new watchers council they had set up, tons of slayers, relatives, old friends from LA who she hadn’t seen in years, friends of her mother, friends from highschool, Angel’s son Connor was there, Lorne had even managed to show up, Buffy had taken a liking to him once she met him, but she didn’t really like the singing thing. He was the one who had told her this would all happen for her, though. So she figured that was a definite good thing. Oz was even there, which surprised her in a good way. Robin Wood had a seat up front since he wanted a good view of his now girlfriend, Faith. A look of shock and happiness crossed over Buffy’s face as she saw one person who she had thought didn’t even care about her. Her dad. He was standing there on the end of aisle, smiling at her. It was a warm smile that made up for everything in the past. She could tell that’s what he was aiming for too. Just by the look on his face she could tell he loved her, and that he really did care.
“Thank you.” Buffy mouthed to him and he gave her a nod.
“Any time, honey.” He mouthed back. “I love you.”
“Love you too dad.” She mouthed once more and felt like she might start crying again, but as soon as she looked ahead and realized she was at the end of the walking part and saw the man she was about to marry, all thoughts of crying left her mind.
She looked over at Giles as he slowly released her and she linked her arm with the man she loved. Giles headed over to stand behind Xander, who stood behind Angel. On the opposite side Dawn stood first, followed by Willow, then Faith.
As soon as the bride and groom had taken their rightful places up at the alter, all of the guests sat down, waiting for the next part of the ceremony to begin.
Buffy kept her hands enclosed in his as they stood there, not taking her eyes from his the entire time. She could barely hear the Priest as he said the things he was supposed to. All she could see was the man she was about to be married to. Nothing else seemed to matter at that moment. Then when it was time for the vows to be said, she snapped out of it. She realized that she was planning to go first so she shook her head gently and closed her eyes before squeezing his hands softly and opening her eyes again.
“I’ve never been the best at letting my feelings out, expressing them and all of that. So I didn’t prepare anything for today. I just wanted to tell you exactly what’s in my heart. No preparation, no looking up the right words. I wanted you know how I feel. My feelings. I used to hate you, despise you and you know all of that. But you kinda grew on me.” She saw a smirk on his lips as she spoke. “You’ve helped me, protected me, protected my sister and my mother, done everything right and you’ve also done lots of things that were wrong, but we’ll get into that later.” She laughed lightly. “You’ve surprised me so many times over the years. Doing good, getting a soul, hell even choosing Angel as your best man.” At that she laughed again and heard a good portion of the guests laughing, as well as bridesmaids, groomsmen, and the groom himself. “You’ve given your life for the world, for me. And now you’re choosing to give your life to me, and it’s the greatest feeling I think I’ve ever had. I love you, and I remember a time when I couldn’t admit that to myself or anyone else, not even you. But now it’s something I’ll shout from the mountain tops if you just give me something to climb up there with.” She paused before continuing. “I had never actually pictured this happening for me. Sure, I dreamt about it, hoped for it, but I never really thought it would happen. I’d been hurt too much for me to believe it could, but you gave me hope. Every time I see you my heart instantly swells and I just know I want to be with you forever. You walk into a room and suddenly I’m in my happy place, knowing that as long as you’re there, I’m safe and content. Nothing bad can happen. Now that this day is finally here, all I can do is smile and laugh. I haven’t been this happy in, well, forever, and all of this happiness I think I’ll blame on you.” She squeezed his hands gently again. “Thank you for being there, for loving me unconditionally even when I’m not being the best person in the world at the moment. Because, let’s face it, I can have some wacked out mood swings.” Once again there was laughing. “Thank you for being you and putting up with me and asking me to marry you. I love you more than life itself and I’ll say it a million times if need be. I love you and I can’t wait to say “I do.” You’re the love of my life, my soulmate. I’ll love you always and forever. I’ll be your girl, always, Spike.”
Around the place a lot of “Aww’s” were heard and a tear had began it’s way down Buffy’s cheek for possibly the millionth time that day. Spike gently reached forward, taking his hand away from her’s just a moment, to wipe the tear away. Once it was gone, he gave her a quick smile before taking her hand again.
Now it was his turn.
“What can I say, love? Didn’t expect you to get all mushy on me, but I guess I’ll have to deal.” He joked and she laughed at him quietly. “I didn’t really plan this either, never was much of the writer. Okay, I may have been a poet a long time ago, but I certainly wasn’t good. Don’t want to waste any of that on you now, do I? You deserve something good, so here it goes.” He paused, taking a breath that wasn’t needed. “I’ve always loved you, Buffy. Even when I hated you I loved you. Hell, I think the first time I saw you I loved you. There was just something about you, still is. Of anyone in this world, you’re the strongest woman I’ve ever known. Your heart is something you shield, not letting anyone in too easily, but once they’re in you love them more than anything and I’ve experienced that first hand. The way you love Dawn, your friends, and now me. It’s wonderful. Your soul is strong and pure and I just know it has to be the reason you’re wearing that white dress...” He winked at her. She blushed and once again laughed at him. “I love everything about you. The way you move, the way you smile, the way you laugh, your voice, that blush in your cheeks just now. Anything and everything about you I could name and know I love it, but since that would take forever, I’ll just keep it short. You’re one hell of a woman, I’ve told you that before and I’ll continue to tell you it because it’s true. There’s no one like you in all the world. No one as beautiful, strong, caring, loving, or anything thing else. It never surprised me when I knew I wanted to marry you, did surprise me when you said yes though. I’d known you loved me but had never expected a yes. But when you gave me that yes it was like everything was completely clear to me. Everything was good. Finally, something completely good happened for me and I think that if I were under that same curse Peaches is, I’d have lost my soul right then. Thank God I’m not, yeah?” Buffy slowly nodded at him, though she knew it wasn’t a question he really wanted an answer to. “No one needs to ask me if I’ll be with you ‘till death do us part’ because I was planning on that anyway. Even if we hadn’t ended up together, that would have been bloody awful, I wasn’t planning on staying too far away from you and would have been there for you till the day you died, or I died, depending on what happened. I still plan to do that, but now it seems we’re making things official. My slayer and I, together forever. That’s the plan. And no matter what... No matter what stupid thing I may do, or what fights we may have, because I just know those are bound to happen, with us especially, I want you to know that I will always love you. I’m completely, hopelessly, madly in love with you Buffy Anne Summers. And nothing will ever change that.”
Once again some “Aww’s” were heard and Spike actually seemed to have a tear in his eye. The Priest had begun talking again and Buffy couldn’t really hear him, she just kept replaying what Spike said inside her head. When she looked down and watched him slip the ring on her finger, the smile on her face grew, and when she put the ring on his finger she noticed he was smiling just as much.
They exchanged their “I do’s” and soon that line they had been waiting for their whole lives was said. “I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
The biggest smile that Buffy had ever smiled was on her face at that moment, and she just knew by looking at the smile on Spike’s face that it was his biggest too. They both laughed a little before he pulled her forwards, wrapping his arms strongly around her and kissing her with every bit of love in his body. All of that love was returned just as well from Buffy. He lifted her off the floor a few inches while he kissed her and once she finally pulled back he sat her back down on the floor.
They just stood there grinning at each other for what seemed like the longest time. All of the guests were standing and clapping as were the bridesmaids and groomsmen, but all they saw in the room was each other.
Every memory Buffy had involving Spike flashed through her mind and she remembered how at one time she would have thought anyone was crazy who would have even suggested she’d marry Spike.
But in life, things seem to surprise you.
