I don't know why they use it. They like randomly throw it in every now and then. And there's a bunch of stuff written in Chinese too!

It's because the Alliance is made up of the two "most powerful countries in the world" - America and China. When Unification day happened, those two countries merged to form the Alliance.
That's why they put a lot of Chinese things in, because we're led to believe that everyone is taught both English AND Chinese. There's also stuff from other cultures too but those are the most prominent ones.
The Alliance flag is a mixture of the American and Chinese flags from our history.
...phew. History over.

And HOW was I supposed to know that??? They haven't said that! All I've known is that the inner planets unified to form the Alliance! That's what I've been led to believe!

Well, there is no "China" in the series, is there? Because Ancient Earth (our Earth) doesn't even exist anymore and they wouldn't call it that anymone. Everywhere is "united" hence "UNIFICATION". Border planets have their own names, but there are thousands of them, there is no "China" or "America" or any of that.
I'd love to learn Chinese. It's such a beautiful and unusual language and far more interesting and more widely used than English.

Chinese is too odd for me. I'll stick to my Spanish and French. Possibly German someday..hmmm... Well, they could say China still! Just because it isn't around doesn't mean they don't know what it used to be called! They could say like... "Back in the days of China..."
